Project Management Institute Aerospace and Defense Specific Interest Group (PMI® A&D SIG)
New Webinar Available on 26 March, 2007

Topic: OPM3 and CMMI Integration
Date:   26 March, 2007
Time:  12 PM EST

 Mark Ward, Ph.D., PMP,
A&D SIG Vice Chair Professional  Development

OPM3 and CMMI Integration
This Webinar will feature a discussion about integrating OPM3 (Organizational Project Management Maturity Model) and CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration). Combining these models adds clarity to the theoretical foundations of both perspectives by comparing and contrasting the underlying tenets of these frameworks. Notably, conducting even one study using one maturity model can use a significant number of resources in terms of education, assessment, and improvement. Successful integration has the practical effect of reducing these expenditures. This Webinar includes a discussion concerning the methodologies used to translate an OPM3 analysis into CMMI results.

About the Speaker
Mark Ward, Ph.D., PMP, is an Assistant Professor of Computer Management and Information Systems at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Besides teaching information systems classes, he
also regularly conducts workshops on PMP® certification, OPM3, and other project management-related topics. He is a retired Air Force officer and worked extensively on the C-17 acquisition team during
his military career. He has many scholarly publications and holds several technical certifications (a complete vitae is available upon request). Besides the A&D SIG, he also has memberships in Beta Gamma Sigma, Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association, Mensa, and the United States National Taekwondo Federation.

Registration details to be announced in the March Online Bulletin.

A&D SIG and DAUAA Renew Cooperative Agreement

On 1 January, 2007, Lynn Dyrdahl, A&D SIG Chair, and Bill Bahnmaier, Defense Acquisition University Alumni Association (DAUAA) President, signed a renewal of a Cooperative Agreement which had been in effect since 9 June 2004. The agreement stipulates that both organizations - having common professional and technical interests - will cooperate in planning and executing initiatives that enhance the professional development of their respective memberships, both in government and industry. Examples of this cooperation over the past three years have included the webinars conducted by the SIG, with participation by the DAUAA membership; and SIG members attending the annual DAU Acquisition Community Conference sponsored by the DAUAA. For the future, the agreement also calls for exploring the possibility of holding jointly sponsored seminars and meetings.

DAUAA Acquisition Community Conference

17 April, 2007 - Capital/Northeast Campus of DAU

DAUAA is sponsoring the DAU Acquisition Community Conference on 17 April, 2007 (see page 6 of the DAUAA Insight newsletter). The one-day conference will be hosted on the Capital/
Northeast Campus of DAU
and will be available on request as a video conference at the regional campuses. The topic for the conference is timely and important:
Trends in the Acquisition and Program Management of Services in DoD
. The conference will closely examine best practices as well as potential pitfalls in the acquisition of services. It will also address the conceptual changes that government and industry program managers, contracting officers, and other functional staff need to embrace in order
to be successful in the services area. This particular theme was selected because a significant part of the DOD budget (at least 55%) is linked to the acquisition of services, and the Office of the Secretary of Defense has targeted this area in order to “discipline acquisition of services management and improve the cost effectiveness of commodity acquisition.” An action-packed agenda has been assembled featuring a Service Acquisition Executive Panel, an Industry Panel, two parallel breakout sessions or tracks, and a Congressional Panel.

The Honorable James Filly, DUSD (A&T) will be the Keynote Speaker, and David Walker, the Comptroller General, will give a GAO perspective on DOD’s acquisition of services.

To Register
Registration fees have been set very low to encourage participation in this event. Acquisition professionals
in both Government and industry are urged to attend and accrue four Continuous Learning Points towards
acquisition training requirements. To register for the conference, personnel should visit the DAUAA
web site at www.dauaa.org or call 1-800-755-8805.

Project managers must also sustain themselves and their teams
throughout the project life cycle!

The 2007 Symposium will feature an engaging program with dynamic keynote speakers, a variety of track sessions and ongoing opportunities to interact with poster presenters, vendors, and PMI local interest groups. In addition, you'll be able to network with other project management professionals.
